Mission Statement
Spirits United is an event designed to provide an outlet
for the diverse spiritual and religious expression of the
GLBT community along with its friends and allies. Spirits
United seeks to provide a safe, non-judgmental, non-confrontational
outlet for spiritual expression during Pridefest weekend.
Spirits United hopes to celebrate the many paths that people
who are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgendered, questioning,
and straight allies take in finding and living out their spiritual
lives.
Brief History
Spirits United was born in the summer of 2007 when
MCC of the Spirit, St. Michael’s Lutheran, and the
Unitarian Church of Harrisburg began discussions about
a joint worship service for Pride weekend. Dave Walker
chair of the PrideFest Committee informed the group
that a Sunday spirituality event would have the full support
of Pride. Invitations were sent out to many area churches
and spiritual organizations that were known to be friendly
and supportive of the GLBT community. The result was an Interfaith
worship service comprised of people and religious leaders
of many faiths, Christian, Jewish, Unitarian Universalist,
and Buddhist. Specific organizations that participated
in the Sunday evening worship service held at MCC of the
Spirit on July 29, 2007 were Unitarian Church of Harrisburg,
Blue Mountain Lotus Society, St. Michael’s Lutheran Church,
St. Pauls United Church of Christ, St. Stephen’s Episcopal
Cathedral, and MCC of the Spirit. This first service
was attended by 120 people. During a summer thunderstorm,
there was an electrical power outage which occurred at the
end of the service as the lights were being dimmed for the
evening candle lighting. We like to think that it may have
been a divine blessing indicating approval of people coming
together to celebrate their diversity.
